Today, I Dereck had been looking forward to his one for one reason, I was going fishing with a family friend on their boat to catch some decent fish with local knowledge. We had heard the waters up here didn’t even need bait the fishing was that good so for sure we were going to be eating fish and crabs for weeks. That was until I received the phone call to say that they couldn’t go due to being over committed and had to sort his family run business out as they were flying to America for a family holiday in the next day or two.

Unlucky for me but lucky to the local sea life as I was kid free and on a mission to catch anything and everything without having to bait up three other people, untangle lines that had been cast over each other and get rigs out of a snag in the water. With the news we decided that this would end our time up here in Gove. So we moved on out to another free camp on the way out back to Katherine called Scouts Camp. When we hit the turn off the track in was large enough to fit the van down easy, we crossed a few medium depth water crossings and came to a point where there was one small camp or a really hard water crossing. We jumped out of the car and went for a walk to see if we could get the van into the larger camp sites further into a smaller track but unfortunately for us we couldn’t get the van in, so we moved on.

We turned on around and thought we could make it about half way back towards the Stuart Highway and we drove and drove until it was about 4.30pm we came across a number of camps that we had planned to stay but being so late they were already full. We found one right near the water, called flat rock creek, only problem being is that there was two other people camping up there in camper trailers so we had to find a spot not to block them in and not on to much of an angle. We drove up the top away from the water to find a camp but instead we found a dead stinky buffalo so we drove back to the water and pulled up where we could next to the water and the other campers.

This spot was awesome seen two snakes swimming in the water and a number of cherubim walking across the road crossing. At night after dinner I took the kids for our nightly hunt for croc eyes with the torches and seen 2 small freshwater crocs waiting to feed when we left them alone. During our spot lighting a few more cars pulled up and we got speaking about how they went fishing as they had a boat, these were the people that told us that Dalaway Bay was going off for the whole week and we should of stayed there. After a small chat we all jumped into bed but I couldn’t stop thinking why we didn’t give that area a go more as we gave everywhere else a fair go? Maybe the one that got away.
